While on vacation, a friend showed me this piece that's been in his family for quite a while. No one has any info on it, no manufacturer's marks are present (other than what appears to be a serial number?). It still had a fired brass shotshell in the chamber when I opened it...lol. It's been repaired quite a few times and I think a new trigger guard was fashioned. It's got a hinged breach with an angled, spring-loaded firing pin that the external hammer strikes.
LOTS of pics to come; sorry for the quality...piss poor lighting.

Looks a lot like this one:
http://www.arms2armor.com/Firearms/zulushotguns.htm
The article says the shotgun at that link is a muzzle loader converted to breech with something called a "Snider breech-loading system" so perhaps your gun isn't the exact same Frenchie but is a conversion with the same Snider approach.
Search on Snider breech loading conversion" or something like that and use the "images" results.

MUCH appreciated; thanks! At first glance, it appears to be the same shotgun to me; it has the same stock with the distinctive forearm.

That's his kitchen table; sheets of stainless (aluminum? can't remember) riveted on. It was the "manliest" kitchen table he could find. His ex-wife spent a small fortune on it...

I didn't know a damn thing about the shotgun but 10 point and a free bump for that kitchen table.
